The peony is a plant of the family of the Ranuncolaceae, of Asian origin, spreads mainly in climatic conditions of humidity. There are several species, among which the Peaonia lactiflora, native to Mongolia and Siberia.
It was known since ancient times, so much so that there were traces already in texts of 2000 years ago (v. Iliad; ancient Chinese texts) even if its diffusion in Europe occurred only from the nineteenth century.
In the past, peony was used for many popular rites.
Its seeds, for example, were used to create necklaces that mothers used to wear to their children to get away from the evil eye. Not only that, the necklaces of peony seeds would also help the children to give relief to the pain of teething and to prevent the appearance of seizures.
According to myths and legends, peony was the only flower grown on Mount Olympus and is still associated with immortality in Eastern culture.
