The prickly pear plant, whose scientific name is Opuntia Ficus Indica L, is an evergreen and woody cactus. Of Mexican origin, in Europe it has been known since 1500. In Sicily, as in many countries of the South, it finds the ideal climate and forms hedges.
Prickly pear, in addition to being juicy and pleasing to the palate, is rich in vitamin C. It contains fiber, carbohydrates, carotenoids (betacaroten, lutein), minerals (calcium, potassium and magnesium), amino acids.
