In cosmetics, vitamin A (or retinol) is widely exploited and used mainly to counter skin aging contributing to the production of elastin fibers, photo-aging, prevent oxidative stress and control the skin bacterial flora, promote cell turn-over and counteract hyper-pigmentation.
When applied to the skin with creams, serums or other cosmetics, vitamin A stimulates the synthesis of new cells by visibly improving the appearance of the skin, making it more hydrated, soft and elastic.

GENERAL INFO, HISTORICAL BACKGROUND, FUN FACT

Discovered in the 1930s by the Swiss chemist Kerrer, vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin found in both animal and plant foods in different active forms.
In the physiology of the body vitamin A covers countless functions: it strengthens and keeps healthy the skin, hair and mucous membranes, protects from infections the lungs and is a valuable healing agent in the treatment of acne and boils. One of the symptoms most often related to vitamin A deficiency is seen "in bloom": when it is insufficient, the skin appears dull, wrinkled, dry. Vitamin A is in fact necessary for the skin, because it affects the metabolism of cells, regulating the permeability and elasticity of cell membranes of skin and mucous membranes. A skin rich in vitamin A is visibly softer, smooth, young and elastic.
