Ceramides are lipids (fats) that represent the main axis of the epidermal barrier, are naturally present in the skin and are essential in cosmetics to support the skin barrier and maintain hydration. Without ceramides, the skin can become dry, irritated or itchy.
Ceramides have been much studied in the last 20 years, but they are still little known.
In the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) have been identified so far about 300 types, but researchers think that they can be even more than 1000.
